Fabric Dyeing Techniques

  • Course
  • 14 Lessons

This is a beginner's guide to hand-dyeing fabrics. I show you my favourite resist fabric dyeing techniques to get colour, texture and random patterns into your cloth. I show you how to use acid dyes and fibre active/ Procion dyes, for dyeing cotton, wool, linen and silk. I love dyeing fabrics and using them in my work extensively, the results are so exciting and personal.

Course Information

I have been dyeing fabrics on and off for 35 years, my techniques are simple and often quick. Nothing gives me more pleasure than rummaging through my fabrics, finding pieces I want to dye, getting all the colours ready and dyeing the fabric, using experimentation, play in an intuitive and reactive way.  The excitement when you get your first peak. The hanging on the line on a warm day and who could have though ironing could be so enjoyable but seeing the true extent of the gorgeous patterns and colours you have created come to life when ironed gives me a buzz.
Every piece is unique and will elevate your work to a more personal level, getting the colours you want instead of being limited by what colours manufacturers think you want.
I love dyeing fabrics and using them in my work, I hope some of this passion will encourage you to have a go.
